What is a constant in life?
Do you ever think of the constants in life? I've been thinking about that a lot lately...
What I mean by constants is, things that stay with you all your life, things that don't go away or, to be specific, things that never really change. We all have things that we want to last forever. We have people we can never imagine losing, dreams that we do not want to toss aside and most of all we wish for happiness to be everlasting.
So if we have so much to wish for, isn't it strange that when I think of constants in my life, to be very honest, I can't come up with many? As much as I'd like to believe that things can be constant, I cannot deny or change the fact that change is inevitable.
To not have any constants in life seems a little grim, doesn't it? It sounds lonely if you ask me, to have to go through so much sort of on your own.
But I'd like to contradict what I said earlier, that there are possibly no constants to life. Because there is one constant in life, and that is change itself.
Change and time are relative.
Have you ever felt like time is slipping out of your hands like sand? The tighter you try to hold on to it the more it spills out of your hands. With every passing second something has changed, and you may not even notice but nothing will ever be the same again. Sounds scary when you talk in words like 'never' and 'always,' right?
No one likes change, at least we don't like when the good parts of life pass us by and we are left with just the great memories. But sometimes when the burden of things constantly changing becomes too much, it becomes as though we wish life would just pause for a bit and let us breathe.
And so it has become the case that change is something that terrifies us. It terrorizes us to live in the moment, it keeps reminding us to savor the good times before it is too late and change is what pushes us to make life memorable.
That doesn't sound all that scary, does it? I don't quite like the idea of change being a burden, but you know what intrigues me? The idea that change is what adds beauty and character to our otherwise monotonous lives.
Sink or swim
We have all sulked about change sweeping up the happy times in life, but is it not true that some time or another we have also been grateful for change? Yes, you could paint change as the villain of the story, but if you don't want to feel stuck in time I advise you to not do that ( trust me, tried and tested ).
Changes can be literal heroes in disguise, after all, think of all the days that felt never-ending, all the times you felt beat down and all those days you wouldn't relive. Change is what lent you a hand in your times of need, change was the shallow breeze that came by and swept up all your somberness and gave you the strength to get back up on your feet every single time you thought it was the end.
To conclude, I can't paint change all white nor can I paint it fully black. Change is not always ideal, and at times it is rather uncomfortable, but I wouldn't want it any other way. Here is a quote that gives me a fresh perspective;
"Nothing changes, if nothing changes"
