You can never be ambitious without ‘being’ ambitious.
Illusion of ambition
Ambition is the drive to do better and more, and what is life if you lack that drive? Being ambitious doesn’t come naturally to everyone, even though it seems like a simple idea to nurture. You’d think almost everyone was ambitious, including yourself, but you may be wrong. See it’s easy to be ambitious in your head, it’s easy to want to have experiences and want to get things done. But ambition is not just the ‘want’ to do things, it’s actually working toward getting them done.
It’s comforting to think of yourself as an ambitious and driven person because that’s who everyone wants to be. But you may be stalling your time by excusing yourself from actually ‘being’ ambitious by believing that you’re already there.
Having ambition is just the first step, what matters most is what you do with that ambition and how you allow yourself to achieve it.
An ambitious person
Ambitious people are those who get up every day and instead of dreaming of this ideal future, they work hard to create it. And it’s incredibly tough to be the person to correct yourself, but that’s what sets apart great from the good. No one wants to live their life as just ‘good enough’, and a great life won’t make itself happen. We often tell ourselves that if so and so happened we’ll be happy, but we are the only people that can actually make those things happen. There’s a path we have to walk on to actualize our dreams and intentionally or unintentionally skipping that journey ensures that your aspirations remain only aspirations.
Take me for instance;
I have a huge bucket list of things I want to do, goals I want to achieve, and where I want to be in the next 20 years. This list includes personal goals, a lot of traveling and so much adventure that when I go through this list feel like such an ‘ambitious’ person. Mind you, nowhere on this list have I made a mention of how exactly am I going to work for these experiences, and what it’s going to take to achieve my goals. I recently caught my own mistake of completely missing the path to a great life, only because I was so busy dreaming of one.
Turning ambition into reality
Imagining good things for yourself is definitely a crucial part of ambition because it develops interest and motivation. But what’s more important is that these aspirations don’t just remain imaginary and that you remember to physically do things to help realize them. That’s the difference between thinking you’re ambitious and actually ‘being’ ambitious. ‘Being’ and ‘doing’ are verbs that imply that it takes effort and intention to be someone and do something.
So be the ambitious person you want to be, and have as many aspirations and dreams as you like, but don’t forget the part where you make them a reality, instead of just ‘wishing’ you’ll get there someday.
